A new front door, and new windows to come
A composite front door has replaced a wooden one that kept warping in the coastal air. Double glazing is due to be fitted throughout the house but has not been fitted yet.
The front door
In February 2026 a composite front door, £3,612 including VAT, replaced a solid wood door fitted in 2017 for £2,500. The wooden door kept warping, shrinking and swelling in the humid coastal air. The new door opens outward and gives access to the enclosed front porch, which was created when the 2017 door was fitted and gives the house a graduated entry.
Still to come: double glazing
Double glazing is due to be fitted throughout the house, apart from the bathroom extension, which already has a new window. It is quoted at £3,563.23 including VAT and will add trickle vents, small adjustable openings that let fresh air in, to the windows. None of it has been fitted yet.
Benefits
- A composite front door, chosen because the wooden one kept warping in the coastal humidity.
Limitations
- Nothing has been measured: no draughts, temperatures or energy figures are recorded for the door.
- The costs are the totals on the quotations, one house's prices, and there was no grant.
- The double glazing is due to be fitted and is not part of what has been done yet.
- Coastal humidity shaped the choice of door; other places differ.
